Brazos Abiertos, Inc. is…

a young, Texas-based 501(c)(3), but we are already empowering the people of Yucatan, Mexico to respond to AIDS. Gordon Crofoot, M.D., our Board President, is an internationally recognized expert in the field of research on HIV and chronic hepatitis.  He describes the current situation there as similar to what he saw here in the United States in the 1980’s.  Our vision for Brazos Abiertos is to be the catalyst for change where knowledge, prevention, and treatment of AIDS replace fear, discrimination, prejudice, and death for those infected.

Our goals are…

• To decrease the spread of HIV and sexually transmitted diseases in Yucatan
• To improve access to healthcare and improve the overall quality of life for those people already infected with HIV

Brazos Abiertos means…

“open arms” in Spanish.

What Brazos Abiertos does…

• Conducts peer-to-peer HIV and safe sex workshops in the Mayan villages

• Distributes free condoms anonymously

• Offers free anonymous HIV testing for all persons

• Offers pre- and post-HIV test counseling

• Supplies food for a local HIV shelter

• Is preparing to offer free HIV clinic services beginning in late 2008

Who our spokesmen are…

The four-time Grammy Award winning Tejano group La Mafia is committed to promoting the Brazos mission.  They believe that the stigma of AIDS is a major obstacle to prevention and makes it impossible for those living with the HIV infection to attain a decent quality of life.
