Our Facilities

Our Facilities

Brazos Abiertos’s facility will be the home of Yucatan’s first private organization providing free HIV medical services, anonymous testing, and state-of-the-art treatment with cutting edge drug therapies. The facility will offer a safe place for counseling, and a center for our education and outreach programs.

The second floor houses The Brazos Abiertos HIV Education and Prevention Center that is used for Brazos Abiertos’ youth education program (TEAMM) and counseling services with space for group meetings. Our condom distribution program—already underway in the villages—will also be directed out of this space.

Brazos Capital Campaign

  • Phase 1: Purchased our own building in Centro Merida and paid cash for it. in Centro. Completed in late 2007.
  • Phase 2: The Brazos Abiertos HIV Education and Prevention Center has been restored and is open for business by March 1, 2010—Completed
  • Phase 3: Brazos Abiertos is currently looking for $50,000 USD to finish restoring the first floor of the building which will become a medical office. It will be named Casa Esperzana (House of Hope).
  • Phase 4: Brazos Abiertos would like to restore the back apartment located on our property so it can provide housing for TEAMM members while they are working in Merida. The funds needed for this project are $8,000 USD.
  • Phase 5: Is in our 10 year plan and will cost an estimated $500,000 USD. The plan is to have our own medical lab so that we can process blood work for our patients.

In late 2007, a building was purchased in the Centro area of Merida by funds from a generous American donor. Well located along bus routes, the building sits next door to the offices of the Secretary of Health of the State of Yucatan. Currently, planning is underway for the renovation that will turn it into a modern health clinic to be overseen by Dr. Carlos Cabrera, a Yucatecan doctor, under the direction of Dr. Gordon Crofoot who serves as both the Brazos Abiertos Medical Director and President of the Board of Directors. Even though the clinic space is currently not useable, Dr. Carlos is monitoring patients in the privacy of their own homes free of charge.

The two-story building will house the free Medical Services on the first floor, with exam and treatment rooms and staff areas. Future plans include a laboratory to process blood tests, and eventually a dental care room.

Fundraising is underway for the renovation project. You can make a donation by sending a check to the address at the left or clicking the button on the left to use PayPal. We hope to have funding in place to complete the renovation and open the facility in 2012.
